14 Times Drake Was Basically Telling You: “You Can Do This!”

In this journey to pay off debt we could all use a little extra motivation. And I could totally throw you a bunch of Tony Robbins quotes (which I admittedly do on my Instagram) but there’s someone else who just gets it.

Drake.

He’s not only my music of choice at the gym (other than Despacito) but also a wise sensei with some nuggets of sage wisdom that are directly applicable to millennials paying off debt or saving for a house.

So from the mouth of the man who popularized the term YOLO, comes some of the greatest motivational quotes on paying off debt. Watch your back, Dave Ramsey, there’s a new financial guru and he was a kid in a wheelchair on popular Canadian teenage drama series.

14 Drake Quotes About Life and Money

“It’s never too late to realize what you want in your life and it’s never wrong to fight for it.”

We all start our journeys at the right time for us. I knew what I needed to do for five years before I actually started doing it. And it took the man I was about to marry to get me on board.

It’s not too late for you and it’s never wrong to fight for what you want. It’s hard to change your spending habits at any age and it’s hard to skip vacations every summer whether you’re $10K or $100K in debt. But it’s worth it. Start today.

“I’m trying to do better than good enough.”

Good enough is making the minimum payment on your student loan and the payment on your shiny car. Be better than good enough! Get that negativity out of your life and be great.

“I was born to make mistakes, not to fake perfection.”

Your debt payoff journey is not going to be a picture of perfection. Even Drake makes mistakes (that Hotline Bling video tho.) and he just comes back better than ever.

“Never let success get to your head and never let failure get to your heart.”

Did you know that even when you’re out of debt you can go back into debt!? I know! It’s crazy but tons of people do it. They get lazy and complacent and end up right where they were before, not much different from yo-yo dieters.

And did you know that people who fail hard while trying to get out actually end up debt free!? Those are the people who typically end up staying debt-free. Failing along the way means lessons learned and humility earned.

“Strength isn’t always shown in what you can hold on to, sometimes it’s shown in what you can let go of.”

What do you need to let go of to be stronger, a friend, family member, or coworker? Maybe you need to let go of some physical items to gain strength. Whatever it is, letting go isn’t weakness, it’s the embodiment of strength.

“Life can always change, you have to adjust.”

Life on the other side of debt is not what we pictured it to be two years ago. I had every right to press pause and it might’ve even been considered financially responsible to do so. There’s always a good reason to quit until you realize the answer is constantly adjusting.

“Sometimes it’s the journey that teaches you a lot about your destination.”

Has. It. Ever. There are things I didn’t know about myself, my dreams, my capabilities before I started this journey. Now I have a clear vision for the future and I like it so much more than my previous plans.

“Always felt like my vision been bigger than the bigger picture.”

The bigger picture might indicate that you can’t pay off your debt right now. But Drake doesn’t think that should stop you. Have a bigger vision.

“Count your blessings, not problems.”

I started Modern Frugality after months of complaining about how paying off debt sucked. I’d said, “I don’t know how I can do this another year.” I was totally ignoring all the blessing I had to help me.

Once I acknowledged them not only did they seem like even greater blessings, but more came. I don’t know how this happens but it does, just try it.

“Smile and let everyone know that today, you’re a lot stronger than you were yesterday.”

Every day you get smarter and more resourceful. Pour yourself a glass of wine and meditate on how much further along you are than last year, last month, or yesterday.

“Everybody dies but not everybody lives.”

YOLO Amiright? While we paid off our debt pretty fast I tried to enjoy the ride. I’m all about journey over destination but you don’t have to spend money to have rich experiences. A lot of our fun involved Groupon, cooking with friends, and looking for free events.

“Before you give up, think of the reason you held on so long.”

It’s why one of the first emails in my 7-day no-spend challenge is to “find your why.” Because when you feel like giving up, remembering why you’re doing this is going to keep you going.

“When writing the story of your life, don’t let anyone else hold the pen.”

That includes marketers. Don’t let the people who sell you stuff dictate what your house is filled with or what car is in your driveway. Decide what your story is, then buy the things that make that story shine.

“I learned working with the negatives could make for better pictures”

You can see how vibrant a photo is by comparing it to the negative. In life, negative experiences make the vibrancy of life apparent. We hate the bad stuff but it’s ultimately the filter by which everything shines brighter.

“Wish you would learn to love people and use things, and not the other way around.”

Do you love things? Try loving people more than your things and see how differently you feel. If you donate $20 you may not get that shirt from Target but you can help feed people or clean their drinking water. There’s so much good to do in the world if we’d care less about stuff and more about each other.

  1. ““Strength isn’t always shown in what you can hold on to, sometimes it’s shown in what you can let go of.”” That is so inspiring, and exactly what I needed right now. I’m going through a lot of things that are requiring me to give up control and it’s very hard to do. Thank you for a great reminder.
